WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program

Northeast Valley Health Corporation health clinic offers WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program, a program that helps educate women on breast feeding and nutrition.

WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for low income women, infants, and children. This program helps pregnant women, postpartum women and young children (less than 5 years of age) eat well and stay healthy.

WIC “supports breastfeeding as the best choice for your baby”. This program offers peer counseling, a helpline, and it provides you with breastfeeding pumps and nursing pads.  Also, through personalized nutrition counseling, or in-group classes, WIC educates its clients on smart shopping, healthy cooking, dental health, and more. As a patient, you have access to healthy cookbooks in both, Spanish and English.

“I started coming when I was pregnant with my little girl… I come every month,” said twenty-four year old mother, Jessica Hernandez, who has been going to WIC (Reseda location) for two years,

“Before giving birth, they teach you how to breastfeed, depending on the weight of your child, they tell you how much to feed them…they teach you about portions,” said Hernandez.

She has found WIC to be beneficial, being that employees at the centers speak both, English and Spanish.

Programa de Nutrición Suplementario (WIC)

Northeast Valley Health Corporation ofrece el Programa de Nutrición Suplementario (WIC), programa que ofrece servicios de lactancia y educación nutricional.

WIC es el Programa Especial de Nutrición Suplementaria para mujeres, bebés y niños de bajos recursos. Este programa ayuda a las mujeres embarazadas, mujeres en el posparto y niños pequeños (menores de 5 años de edad) a comer bien y mantenerse saludable.

WIC “apoya a la lactancia materna como la mejor opción para su bebé” . Este programa ofrece ayuda para la lactancia a través de educadores certificados. También, ofrece una línea telefónica para ayuda con la lactancia, bombas extractoras de leche materna y almohadillas lavables para el pecho. La educación nutricional se puede impartir, tanto a través de asesoría personalizada, y al igual, por medio de nutrición en clases grupales. WIC promueve la compra de comida saludable, y da clases sobre como alimentar a sus hijos, salud dental, y mucho màs. Como cliente, uno también tiene acceso a libros de cocina en inglés y en español.

“Empecé a venir a WIC cuando me embaracé con mi hija…vengo cada mes,” compartió Jessica Hernández, mamá de 24 años. Lleva dos años visitando la oficina de WIC en Reseda.

“Durante el embarazo, enseñan la forma correcta de dar pecho. Todo dependiendo del peso del bebé, te dicen cuanta leche le tienes que dar… te enseñan porciones,” comentó Hernández. 

 El centro WIC ha beneficiado a Hernández, ya que proveen su servicio en inglés y en español.
