These were some of the questions Journalism reporters asked students who currently attend California State University, Northridge (CSUN), in hopes of gathering facts regarding their health, and knowledge on the matter. The current population survey of 2008, showed that thirty percent of young adults (19-29) do not have health insurance, compared with 17 percent of older adults (30-64).

Included in the tuition fee ranging from $7,002-$8,388 for the 2012-2013 school year, full-time students pay a health fee of $57 and an SRC (Student Recreation Center) fee of $130 per semester.

“As students, we have rights to health care”, said Carlos Sapon, a freshmen who relies on health services provided by the school.

With or without health care, some students believed that doctor appointments are not necessary, as long as they were practicing good eating habits, and regular workout routines.

Rodney McCormick, a fifth year undergraduate student believes that staying healthy requires self-care.

“It’s about several things. Getting the right amount of sleep, eating the right foods, not eating too much junk food, exercise, and taking vitamins.”

Rodney’s last check-up was three years ago.

Sophomore, Jennifer Linares, agrees.

“I don’t think I need to go to the doctor daily for them to tell me if I’m healthy or not.”

“I believe staying healthy is pretty much up to me”

The Klotz Student Health Center at CSUN offers basic services, such as, an annual physical, dental service, access to a dermatologist, physical therapy, among other services.

The $63.2 million Student Recreation Center, “promotes lifelong wellness and supports student recruitment and retention” by offering students access to the state-of-the-art weight and fitness zones, rock climbing, indoor track, and other services.
